Japan is an archipelago (a group of islands) located in north-eastern Asia, between the North Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan. The total land area is 370,000 square kilometers, approximately the same size of Germany. About 80% of the land is mountainous and is covered in forests.
A series of mountain ranges run through the centre of Japan like a spine. The mountainous regions act as an border that separates the Pacific side and the Japan Sea side, which have very different climates. Japan stretches for 3000 km from north to south, encompassing both sub-arctic and subtropical climates.
Japan is 3 hours and 30 minutes ahead of India. There is no time difference within Japan as it only has one time zone.
