Thano FRH is a beautiful vintage bungalow built in 1890 and is ideally located to study riverine and ecological succession to conifer forests. The Nakronda swamps in Song block are a showcase for a paradigm shift from broad leaved to conifer forests. An 8 km uphill trek from the FRH is the old dilapidated FRH of Madan Bungalow from where one can get a bird’s eye view of the Dun Valley and the Shiwalik hills, another point called the Ranikhet curve, 3 km from the FRH gives a similar view. Goral top is a 16 km tough trek and, a must for wildlife enthusiasts wishing to sight the Goral. This area is also frequented by elephants. A Trail of about 12 km from the FRH to Ladwakot is a paradise for birds for bird watchers. The FRH register entries of 1930 mention shooting of tigers here. Lachiwala was built in 1887.

Hilly landscape. Bird Watching, Kalusidh Temple (10kms), Balasundari Temple (500ms from FRH). Maidan Bongalow, a Demolished Rest House (5Kms) from this place one can get a complete view of Doon Valley, Shiwalik hills, Narendra Nagar.

Thano-A place for Bird watcher

Thano, a small town near the state capital Dehradun of Uttarakhand state contains lot of natural beauty in it. The nature is full of avifauna, wild life and Sal forest in the region. It is at Raipur Road, in Dehradun, just 25 km from Dehradun.

Dehradun Airport is just 12 km from here. Eco-Tourism of Uttarakhand organized a camp for promoting Bird watching in the Thano. Expert bird watcher give training to Forest Staff, local community and some of travel professions (Pathikworld tours). Around 104 birds has been identified during 3 days camp. Some of are:

Indian robin, red vented bulbul, crested bunting, sun bird, tree pie, pied bush chat, rost ring parakeets, Himalaya woodpecker, white capped water red, white throated kingfisher, rufus treepie, spotted owlet, purple sun bird, great coucal, red water lapwing, gren bee eater, blu whistling thrush, spotted dove, brow headed barbed, common hoppe, common tailer bird, jungle babbler, house sparrow, plum headed parakeets, grey hornbill, Himalayan greenfinch, oriental white eye, long tailed minvet, chessnut headed tesia, black loved tit, large-billed crow, house crow, black kite, common myna, black chinned babbler and many more.

Thano offers wonderful opportunities for incorporating cultural heritage as a major components of eco-tourism initiative in the area. Thano remains a hill passageway for traders, pastoralists, pilgrims etc. traveling from the plains of India into the hills.

Thano in Doon valley and doon valley was the birthplace of modern forestry and Thano was one of the first places early foresters went to for field studies. Remains of one of the oldest forest rest house (FRH) can still found in Ranikhet Village of Thano.
