Kedar Tal is the source of the Kedar Ganga River. A trek over a rugged mountain trail leads one to the Kedar Tal; the spectacular and enchanting lake situated 18km from Gangotri. The difficult trek to the Kedar can pose a challenge to the sturdiest of trekkers. There is no facility of any kind on the way and one has to make all arrangements in advance. A local guide is a must. However, the crystal clear waters of the lake in the backdrop of the imposing Thalaiyasagar (थलय सागर ) peak make the challenge worthwhile. Visitors should ideally go to this spot between June to October.
The place is about 4600 m above sea level and is the base camp of trekking to the Thalaiyasagar, Jogin, Bhrigupanth (भृगुपंथ) and other peaks.
