Nandaur Wildlife Sanctuary

The Nandhaur area is the sub-landscape flanked by River Gola in the west and River Sharda in the east and intersected by River Nandhaur which flows east to west in the northern area and then turn south to cut  the  landscape  into  two  before  disappearing  in  the  tarai  area.  Though  there  are  many  rivers  in  this landscape, but Nandhaur is the most significant among them and also is the only one which is perennial with  substantial  water.

It  also  has  large  swathes  of  undisturbed  forests  which  have  virtually  no habitation.  It is a critical  link  for the wildlife populations to move across the Tarai  Arc Landscape and therefore  makes Nandhaur landscape declared  as  a wildlife sanctuary.

nandhaur-wls-map-core-buffer-zone1

The  majority  of Nandhaur landscape lies  in  Haldwani  Forest  Division,  whose  five  ranges  namely Chakata, Nandhaur, Jaulasal, Danda and Sharda cover about 600 sq. km. area. In the north-eastern side, the Dogadi range of Champawat Forest Division forms an important part of this landscape andis flanked by the forests of of Kilpura, South Jaulasal and Ransali ranges of Tarai East Forest Division.

The core of the Nandhaur WLS  lies  in parts  of all  ranges  of  Haldwani  Forest  Division and  Dogadi  range  of Champawat  Forest  Division.  The peripheral  areas  of  the  above  ranges  and  the  ranges  of  Tarai  East Forest Division in the southern boundary provide an extension to the usage of forests by the animals and are  very  important  for  maintaining  the  connectivity  of  the  forests  with  the  other  areas  to  the  east and west.

The Nandhaur WLS houses a very healthy population of Asian elephants, leopards and sloth bears. It is also home to tigers but the population is low with a great potential of rebound. The total area of the Nandhaur landscape  is  around  850  sq.  kms.  which  makes  the  area  practically  viable  for  sustaining  a thriving population of variety of mega-fauna.

In 14th December, 2012 it become the Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary. Due to expansion of Tiger in Corbett and its continuous movement towards Nandhaur WLS, Government is planning to declared it as 3rd Tiger Reserve of Uttarakhand state.  Presently it covers 269.95 square km area.

Biodiversity of Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary

The Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary is very rich area  in terms of biodiversity. The area  has  more than 100 species of  trees, 30  species  of  shrubs  and  20  species  of  climbers  and  grasses.  The  area  also  has  27 different forest types and sub-typeswhen classified according to the Champion and Seth forest classification. The area  is  predominately  Sal  forest  covering  about  70%  of  its  area.  Besides  this,  it  also  has  Shisham, Bamboo, Teak, Chir Pine a nd riverine  forest. Since the area  lie  in  bhabhar  belt,  it  is relatively dry  and the composition of  forest  is affected by that. However, the Nandhaur river valley  has water throughout the  year and the  best of the  forests in the  landscape are present along the river.

The area is also home to about 25 species of mammals, 250 species of birds, 15 species of reptiles and 20 species of fishes. The major charismatic species of the area are Tiger, Leopard, Elephant, Sloth Bear, Mahaseer and Great Pied Hornbill. There have been constant threats to the area in terms of usage pressure, illegal poaching which can be curtailed by declaring the area as a wildlife sanctuary.

In an effort to document the biodiversity of the area, camera trapping was done in various ranges and some important species captured using camera traps have been listed below.

Saptrishi Kund

saptrishi-kund

The actual source of the Yamuna is located at the very difficult-to-reach Saptrishi Kund. You must have a guide to go there. It is believed that seven great Rishi Kasyapa,  Atri,  Bhadravaj, Visvamitra, Autama, Jamadagni, and Vasistha performed austerities for millions of years here.

Saptrishi Kund is situated in the lap of the Bandarpunch Massif (6135m). The location of the Kund is amidst magnificent and enchanting surrounding of the lofty rock strewn glacier. The 8 km trek to Saptrishi Kund starts from Yamunotri temple. The whole trek passes through dense forests and rugged mountainous terrain.

It takes 16 hours to go up and back down. You have to deal with the high altitude, climbing up hills and over rock, ice, snow, and water. The Kund is about a half km in diameter, and its water is dark blue with slushy snow. Very few people come here, as it is a difficult place to reach.

Roop Kund Trek

roopkund

Roopkund Lake (the Mystry Lake), at around 5,000 meters, offers one of the most spectacular trekking routes with its stunning views of Trishul. It is also famous for the mystery surrounding it. This shallow lake still has the skeletal remains of some 300 people who perished some 600 years ago in an unrecorded disaster. Trekkers have found human bones on the shore of the lake confirming this tragedy. Some believe them to be the remains of General Zorawar’s soldiers who perished here in a vain attempt to conquer Tibet while others maintain that they are the skeletons of zealous pilgrims undertaking the Raj jat, an important pilgrimage. to pay homage to Nanda Devi.

skeletons-at-roopkund-lake
Roop Kund is situated in the eastern part of Chamoli District (in the lap of the Trishul Massif, 7112m). The high altitude (5029m), kund is on the Nanda Jat route to Hom kund. It is not a very large kund and is rather shallow, having a depth of only about 2 meters. The edges are snow covered for most parts of the year. When the snow melts, human and equine skeletal remains cab be seen.

The approach to Roop Kund is spectacular as you pass through high altitude pastures called Bugyals, carpeted with red, blue and yellow flowers with the backdrop of the icy Trishul Massif providing a breathtaking view.

Pindari Glacier

pindari-glacier-trek

The Pindari glacier, in the Bageshwar district, falls in the Kumaun Himalayas and has lured mountaineers and trekkers since the last century. It is one of the most easily accessible of all the Himalayan glaciers. Pindari’s rugged beauty offers a breathtaking sight, especially for the trekkers who is in love with nature in all its pristine glory. The Pindari glacier is an unsurpassable and an exhilarating experience. The colour of the glacier is very white and at some places, spots of light blue and brown may also be seen.

Pindari glacier lies between Nanda Devi and Nandakot peaks in the Pindar Valley, between longitudes 790 13′ – 800 02′ E and latitudes 300 15′ N and terminates at an altitude of 3627m. The glacier is 5 km long, the snout is about 6m high and 2.5 m wide and above the snout, the glacier extends for about 3 km in length and 300-400 m in width, between an altitude range of about 3600m and 5000m.

The valley is drained by the Pinder river that emerges from the Pindari glacier. The river, in its initial course, flows through sedimentary rocks. Further to the south, it meanders through quartz schists. Granite is found in abundance in this area. The Pinder river has cut a gorge in thick glacial deposits up to nearly 10 km, resulting in the formation of spacious glacial terraces spread on both sides of the gorge.

Further down, from Telurkia up to Khati, places en route to the Pindari glacier, the trek to the glacier crosses numerous waterfall, soaring pines, glades of ferns, hanging valleys and tremendous rock cliffs.

There are PWD inspection houses and log huts at almost all halting places en route.
